Dark Patterns are tricks used in websites and apps that make you do things that you didn’t mean to, like buying or signing up for something.

A tool created by WinRed, the donation-processing site, that automatically opts supporters into making additional donations was used for months, and it generated millions of dollars, according to people familiar with the matter. Users had to proactively uncheck a box to avoid making multiple contributions.

Last fall, as refunds surged, WinRed added a line to pricing page: “Fees cannot be refunded if the donation is refunded.”
