Zimmer Durom Cup Hip Replacement

About Zimmer Durom Cup Hip Replacement

Introduced in the U.S. in 2006, the Durom cup has been implanted in more than 12,000 patients. Recently, “metal on metal” implants, such as the Durom Cup, have been used in about one-third of the approximately 250,000 hip replacements performed annually in the United States. They are used in conventional hip replacements and in a popular alternative procedure known as resurfacing.

If you, a friend, or a loved one experienced complications as the result of a Zimmer Durom Cup hip replacement, implanted after March 16th, 2006, you may qualify for a cash settlement. Please complete the form and one of our attorneys will contact you or call 1-800-LAW-FIRM now!

The Durom Cup contains ball-and-socket joints made from metals like cobalt and chromium. Recent studies indicate that the devices wear quickly, generating high volumes of metallic debris that is absorbed into a patient’s body. This debris may cause inflammatory reactions, pain in the groin, death of tissue in the hip joint and loss of surrounding bone.  Many patients have had to undergo painful and costly additional surgeries to correct the defects in the Durom Cup.

Conditions Caused By Zimmer Durom Cup Hip Replacement

  • Inflammatory reactions
  • Death of soft tissue in the hip joint and loss of surrounding bone

Side Effects & Symptoms

  • Difficulty walking and bearing weight
  • Pain in the groin

Warnings & Recalls

  • In July 2008, after it was learned that the surgical parts did not work properly, Zimmer Holdings, Inc. announced that it was temporarily suspending the sales of the Durom Cup in the United States.  Issues with the Durom Cup hip replacement began in April 2008 when a surgeon in Los Angeles, Dr. Lawrence Dorr, publicly warned other orthopedists about cup failures his patients were experiencing.   Zimmer denies any evidence of a defect with the Durom Cup and has refused to issue a recall notice in accordance with procedures established by the Food and Drug Administration.
  • The limited studies conducted so far estimate that 1 to 3 percent of “metal on metal” implant recipients could be affected. Given the large number of people who have received the devices, that could mean thousands of patients in the United States. Reports also suggest that women are far more likely than men to be affected.

Cases, Settlements, & Verdicts

Florida and Kentucky Residents have filed lawsuits in March 2010 against Zimmer Holdings, Inc. alleging defects in the Durom Cup Hip Implant.

  • Lovelace, a 45-year-old truck driver from Elizabethtown, KY, received a Zimmer Durom Cup in May 2008 as part of hip replacement surgery on his left hip. After months of great pain, agony, difficulty walking and bearing weight, he was compelled to undergo a second surgery to remove the defective cup in December 2008.
  • In December 2007, the Durom Cup was implanted in Walker, a 53-year old former registered nurse from West Palm Beach, Florida. She too suffered months of great pain and agony, necessitating her to stop working. In December 2008, her Durom Cup was removed.
  • Lovelace and Walker seek respective damages against Zimmer for multiple surgeries and debilitating injuries they said they suffered because of the allegedly defective Durom Acetabular Component, an artificial hip socket known as the Durom Cup, which is manufactured and sold by Zimmer. Walker’s lawsuit was filed March 11 in federal district court in West Palm Beach, FL Lovelace’s lawsuit was filed in federal district court in Louisville, KY, on Feb. 26, 2010.
