About Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSS)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is "a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma." To be diagnosed as having PTSD, doctors look for six factors, including:

If you have experienced a traumatic event and are having trouble getting social security disability, you may be entitled to a cash settlement. Please complete the form and one of our attorneys will contact you, or call 1-800-LAW-FIRM now.

  1. The patient experiencing a traumatic event. This event will involve the risk of death or injury to themselves or others and the event will create "an intense negative emotional response."
  2. The patient must experience flashbacks to the initial event or have negative emotional responses when faced to situations similar to the triggering event.
  3. These episodes must cause the patient to avoid the triggering situations, be unable to recall the triggering, event or unable to feel certain emotions.
  4. In addition to the emotional response to the trigger event, the patient must show a symptom of increased arousal that wasn't present before. This includes the inability to sleep or concentrate.
  5. The symptoms are present for more than a month.
  6. The symptoms must present a significant impairment to the patient's ability to conduct their lives.

People who meet the above requirements for PTSD are eligible to receive Social Security Disability (SSDI) benefits. To be eligible for SSDI benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will look to five factors. First, they will determine if the PTSD is "working" according to its definition. Second, the SSA will determine if the PTSD is severe enough to significantly limit their ability to work. Third, the SSA will determine that the patient meets the clinical qualifications for PTSD that are listed above. Fourth, the SSA will look at the work the applicant has done in the past and determine if the applicant can continue this line of work. Finally, the SSA will review factors such as the applicant's age, work history, mental health condition, and training to determine if the applicant can do any work. Patients who have faced traumatic situations, deserve to receive social security disability if they are unable to work due of the stress related to the trauma.
