About Levaquin

Levaquin, also known as levofloxacin or Leva-Pak, is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic prescribed to treat moderate-to-severe bacterial infections of the lungs, sinuses, skin and urinary tract. It is manufactured by PriCara, a division of Othro-McNeil-Janseen Pharmaceuticals. Levaquin received FDA approval in December 1996, and is available in oral, intravenous (IV), and eye drop form. The drug has had success in the treatment of severe bacterial infections, but it also poses a number of serious adverse side effects in users.

In 2004, prompted by reports of serious reactions to the drug, the FDA mandated the addition of new drug labeling, warning consumers of the following potential side effects: “Peripheral Neuropathy (irreversible nerve damage), Tendon Damage, Heart Problems (prolonged QT Interval / Torsades de pointes), Pseudomembranous colitis, Rhabdomyolysis (muscle wasting), and Stevens Johnson Syndrome.” In 2008, the FDA added a black box warning regarding the possibility of death. Despite these side effects, Levaquin remains available in the U.S. for prescription.
