In a corporate setting a violation or abuse may occur that relates to consumers, the shareholder, or the taxpayer. A whistleblower discloses information he or she reasonably believes proves a violation of a law or rule, an abuse of authority or regulation, waste of funds, a substantial and specific danger, gross mismanagement to public health, or a substantial and specific danger to public safety. Whistleblowers preserve the public welfare by making sure that companies and government entities engage in honest practices, enact responsible policies, and are held accountable for wrong doing.

When considering a lawsuit it is important the plaintiff show they have been personally impacted by the defendant's actions and have a stake in the outcome of the case. Most whistleblowers are internal whistleblowers, who report misconduct on a fellow employee or superior within their company. External whistleblowers, report misconduct on outside persons or entities. In most external cases, depending on the information's severity and nature, whistleblowers may report the misconduct to lawyers.
