Benzene Exposure
Benzene Exposure Highlights
- Benzene is one of the most widely used chemicals in the United States and is one of the top twenty chemicals by production volume.
- A 1987 study by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration indicated that over 237,000 workers were potentially exposed to benzene that year and it is unknown if or how much that number has changed since then.
- Benzene is a known carcinogen and researchers have linked it to cancers such as leukemia in people who have been exposed to high amounts of the chemical.

About Benzene Exposure
Benzene is an organic compound which has been used as an additive in many different products including gasoline, cigarettes, and industrial solvents. While this is one of the most widely used chemicals in the United States, studies have shown that benzene is a carcinogen.
People who are exposed to excessive amounts of benzene may experience both long-term and short-term effects. The short-term side effects of inhaling benzene include dizziness, drowsiness, rapid heart rates, headaches and confusion.
If you have been exposed to excessive amounts of benzene and developed an illness as a result, you may be entitled to a cash settlement. Please complete the form and one of our attorneys will contact you, or call 1-800-LAW-FIRM now.
Benzene exposure is also linked to blood disorders including anemia (due to a decreased number of red blood cells in the bone marrow), excessive bleeding, and a depressed imune system. Benzene exposure is also linked to leukemia and other blood cancers.
Workers in certain industries may be exposed to high levels of benzene as they complete their daily work. Industries with high benzene exposure rates include the "rubber industry, oil refineries, coke and chemical plants, shoe manufacturers, and gasoline-related industries." This prolonged and regular exposure leaves people working in these industries more likely to experience a benzene related illness.
