About Accidents on cruise ships

Cruises are marketed as an experience within the closed environment of the ship. The inclusive nature provides passengers with a sometimes false sense of security. Passengers assume they are in the company of trustworthy and well screened employees. They feel the ship is a safe environment and often lower their guard.

In reality cruise ships can leave passengers vulnerable. Small oversights can lead to larger saftey issues or injuries. Passengers have reported blocked fire exits and unsecured heavy items shifting when the ship turned suddenly. A ship may have more than 10,000 employees. Passengers becoming victims to workers with ill intentions is more common than most vacationers realize. Personal items may be taken from cabins. Reported missing items often include missing cash, jewelry, passports, medicine, credit cards or electronics. Even more disturbing incidents associated with cruise lines are murder, missing passengers, rape and child porography.

If you or someone you know has been injured or abused while on a Cruise Line vacation, you may be entitled to a cash settlement. Please complete the form and one of our attorneys will contact you, or call 1-800-LAW-FIRM now.

Federal and State Maritime Law imposes strict liability on the common carrier, including cruise lines. They owe a non-delegable duty to safely transport their cruise passengers and protect them from crew-member assaults. Ships have strict liability for crewmember assaults on passengers, sexual and otherwise. Cruise lines have responsabilities to passengers injured during shore excursions or from malpractice by the ship's doctor as well.

Warnings & Recalls

Webites have been set up to identify Cruise Line emplyees registered as sex offenders. In Halfax Canada there has been a long stream of arrests of Cruise Ship crew members for child pornography.

Cases, Settlements, & Verdicts

Cruise line contracts contain clauses written to limit your claim. Failure to follow the rules on your ticket may cause your personal injury claim to be dismissed. Some indicate specific states the suit must be filed and your claim for compensation can extend beyond the parent cruise company. The law of the country of registration of the vessel could potentially apply to events on cruise vessels and could be more favorable to the claimant than United States law.

Several lawsuits have already been filed against Cruise Lines such as Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Inc. and Cambria Commodore Cruise Line, Ltd.
